Bright Nights at Forest Park
Springfield's
Forest Park becomes a stage for fantasy light displays during the Christmas holiday
season. Visitors can drive through the 2.5-mile extravaganza by bus, car, van,
or camper. Over 500,000 lights are used to create the various displays. A unique
display titled “Seuss Land,” approved by the Dr. Seuss estate, cannot
be seen anywhere else. Approximately 300,000 people visit Bright Nights at Forest
Park annually, making it one of the most visited light displays in New England.

City of Bright Nights Ball
The
City of Bright Nights Ball raises money for the light displays in Downtown
Springfield. The gala event includes a gourmet dinner, entertainment,
and dancing. In many instances, the monetary amount raised at this event
allows for decoration in areas of West Springfield as well. Those looking
for an evening of elegance will enjoy contributing to the cause. Call

Parade of the Big Balloons
The
Parade of the Big Balloons takes place at 11 a.m. on the day after Thanksgiving.
Many radio and television stations cover the parade, which attracts approximately
70,000 people. A highlight of the parade is a 75-foot inflatable Cat in the Hat.
Other balloon characters, bands, and marching groups entertain spectators as well.

Star Spangled Springfield
Star
Spangled Springfield takes place on July 4. The night's theme, patriotism,
is exemplified in various activities. America's newest citizens kick off
the night in Court Square, when they are reissued the Oath of Citizenship. A concert
of patriotic music and a fireworks display are other highlights of the night.

Taste of Springfield
Bring
your appetite to the Taste of Springfield. For five days in mid-June, approximately
30 restaurants sell samples of their specialties. Live entertainment also is available
at the event. Local television and radio stations cover the festivities. In past

World's Largest Pancake Breakfast
The
annual World's Largest Pancake Breakfast occurs in mid-May with the help
of hundreds of volunteers, the Massachusetts Army National Guard, and the International
House of Pancakes. The city served its first breakfast in 1976 to commemorate
the country's bicentennial, and it is currently an annual event in Springfield.
In 2001, the event doled out 74,350 servings of pancakes to hungry participants.
